How to install this Page Flip on your website

Step 1. SWF embedding

Download the page-flip.zip package and put all the files from this package into the same folder with the HTML file in which you want the component to be embedded.

You should know first of all that the SWF file is the one that actually represents the component, while the other files (settings.xml, images .xml and JPGs in the images folder) are the assets that the SWF file uses.
A short explanation on how SWFs and XMLs interacts you will find here.

Open your HTML file with a text editor and insert somewhere between the

tags the following lines:

For a fast and easy publishing, the best thing to do is to have the SWF file, the HTML file which embeds the SWF, the swfobject.js file, and the assets that the SWF uses (XMLs, JPGs folder) in the same folder.

If that is not possible, please read this detailed article on how to specify the paths correctly.

The above code itself isn’t enough to publish the SWF file on your webpage. You just need to add a div somewhere in the body section of your page (between the

tags of your HTML file).

So, in a specific location of your HTML body section insert this div:

Step 2. Customization

You’ll be able to define a maximum size of 1680 in width and 1050 in height in the 3rd and 4th arguments of the swfobject.embedSWF() function above. Usually the same values as for width and height of the component which you will also set below.

Now you will have to define the properties of your Page Flip.

You can do that by editing the settings.xml file, or much simpler, set your values on the Live Demo above and press Generate button, then press Copy and paste over the existing content of settings.xml file.

If you intend to have multiple Page Flippers on the same page, for the same pageflipper.swf file you’ll need to have different settings.

If you'll design your own skin for the control bar (play, next, print buttons) all you have to do to integrate it into this page flipper is to slice the design so for each button you will have a different image (JPG, GIF, etc). Then in the skin.xml file, for each control (button) you will be able to define two states for each button (regular and mouseover). The background of the control bar, the font face, size and color of the number pages and the background of the number pages you will also be able to customize through the same intuitive skin.xml file.

All is left to do is to put your own images or swf's inside the pages of Page Flip. You'll be able to do this through the images.xml file. In the images.xml file from the downloaded package you will see how these details are specified so you could change them with your own custom details. Two currently displayed pages can be defined by two different images or just by a single image. You can also have animated text over the pages as you can see in images3.xml file.

You can have as many pages (images) clips as you like. To add a new image add a new item tag in the XML file.

If you’ll want to use Page Flip in Flash projects (FLA files), the Page Flip FX is available as a Flash component (MXP file) in the commercial package

Instructions on how to use the Page Flip FX component in Flash you will find here.

Make sure your Wordpress version is greater than 2.8 and your hosting provider is using PHP5.

1. There are two files to download:

    a. WordPress Plugin that you have to install and activate

    b. Free package

2. Create a new folder inside your wp-content folder called flashxml, inside this folder create a new one called page-flip-fx and copy the content of the free package there

3. If you copied the free package to a location different than the one above, go to Page Flip FX from the Settings tab from your WordPress Dashboard and update the path accordingly

4. Add [page-flip-fx][/page-flip-fx] where you want the Flash to show up in your post/page.

5. If you want to make the Page Flip FX part of your theme, edit the template files and add <?php pageflipfx_echo_embed_code(); ?> where you want it to show up

6. Customize your Page Flip FX using the Live Demo from the top of this page. Generate the settings.xml text and use it to overwrite wp-content/flashxml/page-flip-fx/settings.xml

7. To use your own images, upload them to wp-content/flashxml/page-flip-fx/images and update the wp-content/flashxml/page-flip-fx/images.xml file accordingly

Additional settings file

To embed the Page Flip FX more than once, you will need another settings file and (probably) another set of images. Let's assume your new file is called settings2.xml. Add [page-flip-fx settings="settings2.xml"][/page-flip-fx] where you want the Flash to show up in your post/page. If you made the Flash part of your theme, add the file name as the first argument of the pageflipfx_echo_embed_code() function call (for example <?php pageflipfx_echo_embed_code("settings2.xml"); ?>).

No Flash support text

To support visitors without Adobe Flash Player, you can provide alternative content by adding the text between [page-flip-fx] and [/page-flip-fx]. If you made the Flash part of your theme, add the text as the second argument of the pageflipfx_echo_embed_code() function call (for example <?php pageflipfx_echo_embed_code("","Alternative content"); ?>).

If you have PHP4

To make it work with PHP4, add [page-flip-fx width="600" height="300"][/page-flip-fx] where you want the Flash to show up in your post/page. If you made the Flash part of your theme, add the width and height as the third and fourth argument of the pageflipfx_echo_embed_code() function call. Don't forget to provide your own width and height values, since 600 and 300 are just examples.

Getting rid of the FlashXML.net label

To remove the FlashXML.net label from the top-left corner you'll need to buy the paid package. Once you'll do that, simply use the SWF file from the paid package to overwrite the SWF file from the wp-content/flashxml/page-flip-fx/ folder.

Make sure your Joomla version is 1.5 and your hosting provider is using PHP5.

Joomla Module Instructions:

1. There are two files to download (both under GPL License):

    a. Joomla Module that you have to install and enable

    b. Free package

2. Create a new folder inside your Joomla folder called flashxml, inside this folder create a new one called pageflipfx and copy the content of the free package there

3. If you copied the free package to a location different than the one above, update the Path from module's parameters accordingly

4. Customize your Page Flip FX using the Live Demo from the top of this page. Generate the settings.xml text and use it to overwrite flashxml/pageflipfx/settings.xml

Joomla Plugin Instructions:

1. There are two files to download (both under GPL License):

    a. Joomla Plugin that you have to install and enable

    b. Free package

2. Create a new folder inside your Joomla folder called flashxml, inside this folder create a new one called pageflipfx and copy the content of the free package there

3. If you copied the free package to a location different from the one above, update the Path from module's parameters accordingly

4. Add {pageflipfx}{/pageflipfx} where you want the Flash to show up in your article

5. Customize your Page Flip FX using the Live Demo from the top of this page. Generate the settings.xml text and use it to overwrite flashxml/pageflipfx/settings.xml

6. The default name for the settings file is settings.xml, but if you want to use another file (for example settings2.xml), specify the name like this: {pageflipfx settings="settings2.xml"}{/pageflipfx} where you want the component to show up in your article

7. In some cases the width and height will not be read from the settings.xml file but you can specify them like this: {pageflipfx width="400" height="300"}{/pageflipfx}. Don't forget to provide your own width and height values, since 400 and 300 are just examples.

Getting rid of the FlashXML.net label
To remove the FlashXML.net label from the top-left corner you'll need to buy the paid package.
Once you will do that, simply use the SWF file from the paid package to overwrite the SWF file from the flashxml/pageflipfx/ folder.

Below you will see instructions on how to install and use the Page Flip Component in Flash (available for Flash CS3, CS4, and Flash Player 9 or later).

For basic instructions on how to integrate the Page Flip’s SWF file into HTML/PHP, click here.

You can watch an installation video tutorial of a very similar component in Flash (3D Carousel Menu FX) by clicking here.

In this video you will see:
- how to create an instance of the component on the stage: from the Components panel (Ctrl+F7) drag & drop the component on the stage
- how to give a name to that instance for further use in ActionScript: click on the component instance on the stage and from the Properties panel (Ctrl+F3) enter a name in the text input
- how to access the properties of the component (read or modify) during different moments of your Flash application

Any property of the Component could be accessed that way. The names of the properties are identical with the ones from the settings.xml file.

The properties of the component can be of any of the three types: Number, String, Boolean. We assume it’s intuitive of which type each property is.

Warning! Setting the parameters of the component in the Component Inspector window (Shift+F7) and in the same time having a settings.xml file populated with different values for each property, the properties from the settings.xml file will have priority (meaning that a parameter set in the Component Inspector will be ignored if that parameter is also defined in the XML file)

For now, this component doesn't dispatch events, but stay tuned for an update.

hello !
can i generate exe and use it ?
and one more question , if i am gonna use it offline like e-catalogue on CD’s , would the type of the license prevent me ??
thank you

FlashXML Support

Hi,

You can’t generate an exe because this is a Flash component.
You need a personal or commercial license according to what type of application you’re using the product.

I’ve uploaded the paid version of the page flipper, and tried to customize my flash with the photo album style. I copied and pasted the new code, but the “nature” flipper is still there.

I don’t do too much with coding, but it appears to me that the photo album isn’t in the paid version of the download.

Am I wrong or what am I missing.

FlashXML Support

Hi,

The other live demos are not included in the purchased version but we can send them on request. I checked your website and it seems the page flip it’s not embedded on that page. Send us the correct link and we will check it to see what’s missing.

Dear Support,

I need help again. I have uploaded photos per instructions #7 for Wordpress.

I think I updated the wp-content/flashxml/page-flip-fx/images.xml file correctly, but I’m not positive.

The new pictures are not showing. Not really sure what to do at this point.

Thanks for your help.

FlashXML Support

Hi,

We’ve checked your website and when we tried to access the images directly, we got 404 errors. Please send the login details for your wordpress and your FTP to support[at]flashxml.net and we will look into the problem.

Hi,
how can I make for example, I wanna have two articles with this flip book but with different pictures, how to set another folder for images that have to be show?

FlashXML Support

Hi,

Please follow the steps from this tutorial.

If I understand you correctly, the way you are instructing only allows for one set of text properties for the entire slideshow. In other words ALL text would have to, for argument sake, be positioned lower left. But that may not work best for the various pictures that will be in the slideshow. Sometimes you want it lower left, sometimes upper right. Those would have to PARAMETERS attached to the “
Slideshow is enabled

The pages are flipping automatically
” statement in Images.txt. I’m guessing it’s something like ‘align=“left”’ or “position:BC”, but I don’t want to have to make a thousand guesses. This is why I’m asking what the available parameters are.

FlashXML Support

Hi,

That’s right.
As you can see above on the Live Demo there is a section called Text Properties.
There are two properties hPos and vPos.
This properties allow you to align the text in any position you want. But this would be for all pages. In other words the text will appear in the same position on all pages.
You could set hPos and vPos to random, this way the text will appear in a different position on each page.

I’m just trying to figure out what are the parameters I can use to bring text onto the screen. Positioning, how it enters, etc. In other words, if I wanted to have some text show up on the left page near the top, and fade in, how would I do that? Or how would I have it roll in, and land on the right page near the bottom? That kind of thing. Parameters…

FlashXML Support

Hi,

First you have to add the CDATA attribute to the photo tags from images.xml file like this:

<photo image="images/firstCover.jpg" url="http://www.flashxml.net" target="_blank" time="5">

Slideshow is enabled

The pages are flipping automatically

</photo>

About the text effect you can use the live demo from above – DEMO 3 to change the way the text appears and use the generated text to overwrite your settings xml file.

The images do no fit into the page as defined by pageflip. without adjusting the size of the component how can I get the pics to fit? Do I need to scale each pic before they are placed into the components folder?

page flip = 785 my pics are 8.5“x11” (from a magazine)

FlashXML Support

Hi,

The width of the images have to be half the total width of the Page Flip FX component.

No real instructions I can find on how to manipulate the various xml files. For instance, how do I insert text, apply effects (fly-in, etc), hyperlink the text, etc.? I was able to figure some stuff out on my own (like how to change the position of the video on top of the jpg., but with no example to reverse engineer, I’m left doing the thing I hate most; asking for directions… Please?

FlashXML Support
